Story

It will be 10 years in November since we lost our wonderful mum to MND so this year, I have set myself the challenge of completing 10 half marathons - one for each tremendously difficult year without mum. I am hoping to complete my 10th half marathon in 2018 at the Swiss City Half Marathon in Lucerne on 28th October.

Swiss City Half Marathon Lucerne - 28th October 2018

8th November 2018
An emotional day taking part in the Swiss City Half Marathon. Arrived in Switzerland a couple days earlier to spend some time with the family. Unfortunately, they weren't quite fit enough this year to run with me but made for a great cheering squad. The conditions on race day were far from ideal - 2 degrees and pouring rain! However, so many people braved the weather to support all the runners so the atmosphere was amazing! Steep hill 3 miles into the run and after struggling to recover from a cold and feeling the impact of the altitude, I realised then what a difficult challenge finishing this half marathon will be! The views over the lake and mountains was stunning! However, the rain was relentless and my knee was giving me some grief 7 miles in but I kept running. I knew mum was there with me every step of the way; encouraging me to keep going. I saw my cheering squad waving just before the finish line - big smiles and proud of my achievement. 10 half marathons - one for each tremendously difficult year without mum! 18 runs in 2018 and over 100 running miles covered in October again! I will continue to run and fundraise in memory of my lovely mum - I miss and think of her every day. Until there is a cure, there is no finish line!

Chesterfield Half Marathon - 21st October 2018

8th November 2018
Last race before my Swiss City endeavour! Surprised by Ewen before the run - first a shout out on the radio, then he turned out to be a last-minute race entrant! Really enjoyed running with the Run MND crew. A hilly run in gorgeous sunshine - 9th Half Marathon completed!

Manchester Half Marathon - 14th October 2018

19th October 2018
No doubt the toughest run yet! Had to run the first 4 miles entirely on my own as I started the race an hour late due to heavy traffic to the stadium! Mad rush to the start line and anxiety levels were at an all-time high! The rain was relentless but the support from the volunteers along the route was amazing and kept me going. I eventually caught up with a group of runners and somehow made it to our Team MND cheering point at mile 12 where I was greeted with big hugs and lots of smiles! It is everyone's amazing support, encouragement and tremendous kindness that makes all the difference! Was happy to finish in my second fastest half marathon time of 2h 13min! Half Marathon number 8 done! #NoFinishLineUntilThereIsACure #TeamMND

NSPCC MK Half Marathon - 29th September 2018

2nd October 2018
Finished my 7th half marathon on Sunday! Took part in the NSPCC Half Marathon in Milton Keynes. Great company and a well organised event! Ran the first lap with Ewen which helped to get me through the first 6 miles which I always struggle with! Lovely route and gorgeous sunshine so really enjoyed this run. Happy with my time of 2:14 given that I covered 26 miles in training during the week. Only 2 more half marathons to go till I take on the Swiss City Half Marathon in Lucerne!

English Half Marathon - 16th September 2018

17th September 2018
My second half marathon in the space of 7 days and the 6th overall this year! Tough first 7 miles and tired legs made this run much harder than I had hoped it would be! There were so many times I felt like stopping but giving up just isn't an option! I really had to pull myself together for the second half of the run and eventually managed to put the "turbo" on. I'm a bit disappointed with my time as I know I could have done better but this run just didn't go to plan. Lots of awareness raised along the route though and that's what matters in the end!

Northampton Half Marathon - 9th September 2018

15th September 2018
Half Marathon number 5 this year! First time I took part in the Northampton Half - a couple more hills than expected which made it tougher than I hoped it would be. However, I ran alongside some amazing people and was glad to be able to contribute to an exceptional Team MND effort! Thanks to everyone's incredible kindness and superb support, I managed to run my fastest Half Marathon yet, despite a minor setback 12 miles into this run when sickness struck and forced me to stop for a couple of minutes! Mum would have probably just shaken her head and be far too worried as usual! But it was thinking of her that kept me going as I knew she was with me every step of the way. So not completing this run was never going to be an option as there is no finish line until there is a cure!
